Letter To Students

Dear Students,

The Nashville Chapter of the National Association of Black Accountants, Inc. (NABA) is currently seeking students to join the Nashville Metropolitan Student Chapter. NABA is an excellent opportunity to expose students to accounting professionals. Since 1969, the National Association of Black Accountants, Inc. has been the leader in expanding the influence of minority professionals in the fields of accounting and finance. The goals of the Association include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • To promote and develop the professional skills of our members;

  • To encourage and assist minority students in entering the accounting profession;

  • To provide opportunities for members to fulfill their civic responsibility;

  • To ensure long-term financial stability and provide adequate resources to implement chapter, regional, and national programs; and

  • To represent the interests of current and prospective minority accounting professionals.

NABA sponsors several key programs and services designed to address the needs of students majoring in the fields of accounting, finance, or business administration. If you are a student interested in obtaining the grooming necessary to begin a successful career in business, obtaining competencies that are not taught in the classroom such as Business Etiquette, Networking, and Money Management, then NABA can equip you with these and more.

NABA's programs and services include the following:

The National Scholarship Program is administered at the national and local level. These competitive scholarships are awarded to deserving and successful college students to assist in furthering their education. Over $2.6 million has been awarded since inception.

Regional Student Conferences are held annually in each of four regions. They focus on career development and placement, as well as preparation for entry into the accounting profession. At the conferences, students can interview for internships and permanent positions.

ACHIEVE student newsletter is dedicated to keeping you up-to-date with information on the business world, updates on NABA activities, and articles written to motivate growth and development in the reader. The newsletter is published three times a year.

The Accounting Career Awareness Program (ACAP) is a one-week residency program for high school students interested in a career in business. Held at a local college or university, the program introduces students to accounting, finance, economics and management through a focused, undergraduate-level program taught by college faculty and guest lecturers from business and government.

The Distinguished Collegian Award recognizes NABA students who are making a difference in their chapter and their community. Distinguished Collegians are the Who's Who of NABA's student membership. They are officers, chairpersons, and outstanding leaders in NABA and other campus organizations; they volunteer at their school and in the community; and they maintain high academic standards at the same time.

NABA also sponsors the Annual National Convention during which both professionals and students interact with representatives from organizations interested in hiring.

Some of the many advantages of having a professional chapter assisting you are:

  1. Mentor Program - An opportunity to expose students to professionals, who are willing to invest time in helping develop students for the "working" world by sharing their experiences and wisdom for success.

  2. Scholarships - In addition to scholarships offered through your College of Business, one goal of each NABA professional chapter is to seek funding to support scholarships for NABA students.

  3. Leadership and Professional Development Sessions - NABA professionals help coordinate training opportunities on various topics such as Resume Writing, Interviewing Skills, Business Etiquette, Developing Effective Communication Skills, How to Run a Student Chapter, etc. Many of these topics will help prepare NABA students for the Annual Regional Student Conference.

  4. Professional Guest Speakers - The professional chapter support network can be used to identify speakers for the student chapters' professional meetings to speak on accounting, finance, information technology and business-related topics.

If you are interested in joining, please download and complete the membership application.
